Reflection on Education

Recently I received news about colleague being internally promoted and also heard of new names expressing and harbouring the thought of looking for greener pasture elsewhere. Is this part and parcel of our education career? A female colleague of mine expressed that all she wanted to do was to teach, but many other things came along with it. Well, I guess many of us in the teaching career feel the same way. I think not that we mind the many other things that came along, but they are just too overwhelming. So overwhelming that alot of times we question our professionalism and our very existence in the system.
Schools today are so different. In the name education, policy makers and educational leaders have implemented thousand and one initiatives to so called improve the quality of education here. The question that we really need to ask is are we progressing or degressing in the light of all these initiatives? Are we dwelling in a world of "make-believe"? Schools today are so crazy over running projects and programmes that teaching becomes the last thing that we think about. I am not saying that projects and programmes are no good, but are we doing too much? Are we trying too hard to be a "school" that we are not?
I was sharing with a friend of mine about the MC rate in certain schools and how teachers use their MC as "Own Care Leave". She commented and questioned the professionalism of teachers. I don’t blame her for thinking that way, but for many, teaching has been reduced to just merely another job, another means of wage-earning. As such, perhaps not many are talking about dedication, or passion, or commitment, or even sacrifice anymore. These are alienated words in teaching today. No matter how nicely the media attempt to project the nobility of teaching as a career, society has reduced it to just another job, or really just another career. I maybe wrong but I don’t think I am far from truth.
Gone are those days that teachers are well-respected and highly regarded by the community. Student-teacher relationship has been reduced to simply service provider-client relationship. Parents and the community will always find means to "feedback" on the poor quality of service that teachers are giving. The question is, is teaching ever a service? Although not explicitly mentioned by many, the idea that customers are always right is embedded in many schools. Teachers are made to apologise for disciplining the students. Have we lost our courage to discipline? Perhaps teachers are not empowered by higher authority and thus losing their courage to teach and discipline.
At the end of the day, what kind of teacher do we really want?

Pray for Israel

Pray for the Peace of Israel!
Pray for the Peace of Israel!
Pray for the Peace of Israel!
" Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." Psalm 121:4
"Jerusalem – built as a city that is bound firmly together, to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord." Psalm 122:2-4
"The Lord bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life!" Psalm 128:5
"O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore." Psalm 131:3
"For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for His dwelling place: This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it." Psalm 134:13,14

Happy New Year!

Praise the Lord for another new year! His mercies and grace are new every morning and every year. I would like to wish everyone a
Happy Chinese New Year and may the good Lord bless you and keep you in His perfect peace!
Last night we were rushing out all the Carnival Tickets and it was really fun, though very tiring. I really want to thank God for a great team who is willing to sacrifice their own times. It was fun stamping each and individual carnival ticket. And it was more fun for us to just simply come together to do something. It’s rare occasion that we can just come together to have so much fun and laughter. It’s amazing how we were able to rush out the tickets for the students.
This morning we did it again. With the effort of everybody in the committee, we rushed out the tickets for all the teachers so that they can bring with them during their Chinese New Year visitation. Praise the Lord and all glory belongs to Him and Him alone! Of course, all thanks to everyone in the Committee.
It was also a great time together at Sanur too, a good lunch indeed! I had a good catch up with some of my colleagues and friends. Really amazing and I really thank God for every moment that we can spend time like this. Praise God!The food was good, the fellowship was even better. Time well spent indeed!
Okay that’s all for now!

Reflection on Worship

Was in the service at Church of Praise. I was in the church since the church was 4 years old. To date I think I had been with the church for 10 over years until recent years. It’s great to see that the church is now in a more settled place. I like the worship place at Carepoint and I think those who have been in this church long enough will appreciate the place more. As I was in the service and while the rest of the singing was going on, the Lord God dropped me a little message. He said that it really doesn’t matter where we worship the Lord. It really doesn’t how we worship the Lord. The Lord God is seeking the true worshipper who worships the Lord in spirit and in truth.
Worship is a spiritual thing. Alot of people try to make it a physical thing. However it is purely and wholly a spiritual acitivity. When we worship the Lord with all of our heart and mind and soul, our spirit is connected with the Holy Spirit of God. The Spirit of the Living God then lead us into holy communion with the Father and the Son. In this communion, God reveals through His Spirit the divine things and allow us to catch a glimpse of His majesty and glory. But ultimately, worship is about glorifying God and enjoying Him.
Worship is also about knowing God. God wants us to worship Him in truth, in the knowledge of His Son and divine majesty. It is God’s desire to make Himself known to us. The whole idea of creation is to reveal the divine and introduce man to the heavenlies. However, the first man, Adam, fell from that and from generations to generations, it is impossible for man to know God to His fullest. God changed this condition by sending His Son to break the great division, between God and man, and reconcile us back to God Almighty! Today, we can once again walk into the Most Holy Place and behold His Mercy Seat, the light of His Shekinah glory!
So it doesn’t really matter where I am and where I will be. Where the Presence of the Lord God is, there will always be a song from my heart to Him!

Happy Meal

We stayed overnight in school again. As usual the camp is on and we are out or in for great ideas. This time round we will have a great steamboat meal together. I guess only people like us can think of ideas like this. I brought the steamboat from home and we went to buy all the goodies from NTUC.
It was a good meal together. Lots of laughter and fun. It’s amazing how we can become so closely knitted. We have only known each other for two to thee years. I guess it’s because we see each other almost every day. It’s also because we have been through projects after projects.
Good friends are indeed hard to come by. We should treasure them. We should remember them. Well, but it’s always when we are parting that we realised sometimes treasuring them can be near to impossible. Friends are probably the best thing that happened to me in the school.
Well, got to sleep. Going to sleep besides my workstation. It’ll be another hard day of work again.
May the Lord God empower me and strengthen me to an effective teacher to all my students.

Good Lessons

I am quite satisfy with my lessons this week. I can confidently say that most of them are engaged with my lessons and they are finding History very interesting as a subject. It’s actually very fulfilling teaching this batch of secondary one students. Even the Normal Technical students are pretty good. They are responsive to the lessons and they want to learn. To a large extent, I can see hope in them so far. On the other hand, let’s not be too positive about them since it is only the fifth week.
I was particularly happy with 3T9 during our Friday English lesson. They were so responsive and engaged in the works that I gave them. We did it together and they felt very confident with themselves. I came out from the class very fulfilled and satisfied with them. I am so glad that my students look forward to my lessons. A few students from 1E5 came to me and said that they love History and me lessons are very interesting. All praise to the Lord!
Every Sunday during the Coporate Intercession in Saint Andrew’s Cathedral, I will offer my prayers to God on behalf of them. I think the greatest thing that a teacher can give to the students is to stand in the gap, between God and them, bridging them with the Divine. My students need the Lord! Our teachers need the Lord! Our school needs the Lord! Everyone need the Lord!
